The current temple structure was built in the 19th century by the queen of Jaipur, Maharani Gularia, after the previous temple was destroyed by an avalanche. Over the years, the temple has undergone renovations and additions to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims.

Ponies and palanquins are available for those who cannot undertake the trek on foot. The temple remains closed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.

The temple is located near the Yamunotri Glacier, which is considered to be the source of the Yamuna River. The glacier is a popular attraction for tourists and pilgrims.
